Coming this month, Spanish Maestra Señora Coxen and I are working together preparing your children for Dia de los Muertos. The students will be learning the cultural significance and practices of Day of the Dead.
We will be building an altar to Frida Kahlo (a Mexican artist the students are studying in art), using the elements learned in Spanish class about a traditional day of the dead altar. Students will then decorate the halls and masks with papel picado and calaveras. A selfie station will be set up by the Spanish office and the La Catrina door for students to dress up like Frida Kahlo. Please ask your kids about what they've learned and what they've drawn and worked on in Art and Spanish as it relates to this unit. Many of our students have already added an amazing understanding of this beautiful holiday, sharing their own experiences from home.
If your family celebrates Dia de los Muertos, please feel free to comment on this post and share with us your family's experiences. I look forward to working with everyone on this unit of study.
