Come by and see us tonight at Preston Hollow. We are excited to start this year with your children. There are a lot of exciting things going on this year with integrating our Real School Garden, IB authorization visit, and much more. Coach M., Ms. Coxen and myself (Mr. Matlock) are waiting to see all your smiling faces down by the gym. Ms. Brooks is awaiting you in her new room (Room 4, across from the auditorium).

With the Dallas Museum of Art's new exhibit featuring the works of Jackson Pollock, Abstract Expressionist, the fourth and fifth graders have begun studying his work and methods. During this process students are working with balance and rhythm to create playful art pieces mimicking Pollock's style. They're learning terms like asymmetrical balance and nonobjective. Here are some examples of some of our students' works.
Let's try this again. So that everyone can see all the amazing support our young artists are getting from faculty, staff, parents, and community. Bigger picture this time.
I'd like to thank everyone who showed up to support our new batch of published artists. To Mr. Brandt, our fearless leader, Mrs. Coxen, our enthusiastic Spanish teacher, Mrs. Ceniceros, our amazing office manager, Mrs. Grimm (Mom), our elite fourth grade teacher: thank you all for sharing this occasion with our young aspiring artists. To all the parents that came, thank you for allowing me the honor and privilege of educating your children in the ways of artistic expression. Special thanks to Mrs. Grimm for collaborating with me on this project for yet another year. It is my pleasure to announce that Preston Hollow Elementary has had five of our young artists selected for publication in the Preston Royal Library branch Calendar. A special thanks to Ms. Grimm for collaborating with me on this opportunity for our young artists. A reception will be held at the library next Thursday; I invite anyone to come support our students as they are being honored. I look forward to seeing everyone there.
If you have an opportunity to visit Preston Hollow, then you'll notice a collection of constellations done by students from various grade levels (study of lines and texture), reproductions of Matisse's La Gerbe by Kindergarten and First (study of color and organic shape), and Kindergarten's rainbow portraits (study of colors of the visible spectrum). Coming soon a new collection: masks for Dia de los Muertos (study in cultural art focusing on warm colors, symmetrical balance, and form) and for our Kindergarteners symmetrical butterfly sculptures (form, symmetrical balance, and warm colors). Also the creation of a designated art display area - this will really highlight and showcase our student work. Special Thanks to our amazing PTO board members for making that possible.
This week saw us starting our Day of the Dead project. Students from first through fifth began their work on a masks. Students are also learning about color families (specifically this week - Warm Colors). Feel free to question your children about them. Hint - Warm colors: Reds, Oranges, and Yellows and Cool colors: Greens, Blues, and Violets. Select masks will be chosen for display for Dia de los Muertos on Monday November 2. Our Spanish teacher (Mrs. Coxen) and I will be setting up a Selfie station (Frida Kahlo style) and a Day of the Dead Alter.
Coming this month, Spanish Maestra Señora Coxen and I are working together preparing your children for Dia de los Muertos. The students will be learning the cultural significance and practices of Day of the Dead.
We will be building an altar to Frida Kahlo (a Mexican artist the students are studying in art), using the elements learned in Spanish class about a traditional day of the dead altar. Students will then decorate the halls and masks with papel picado and calaveras. A selfie station will be set up by the Spanish office and the La Catrina door for students to dress up like Frida Kahlo. Please ask your kids about what they've learned and what they've drawn and worked on in Art and Spanish as it relates to this unit. Many of our students have already added an amazing understanding of this beautiful holiday, sharing their own experiences from home. If your family celebrates Dia de los Muertos, please feel free to comment on this post and share with us your family's experiences. I look forward to working with everyone on this unit of study. Welcome to Preston Hollow Elementary's Parent Conference Night!!! The Specials team is awaiting all parent arrivals by the gym. Ms. Brooks, Ms. Coxen, Coach M., and myself (your favorite teacher-Mr. Matlock) are all excited to visit with all parents.
